Image and Identity Programme Artwork
'Image and Identity is a project funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). 12 young carers from Trafford have been part of the 2005/06 Image and Identity programme, and have produced this stunning artwork.
Prior to the project staff from Trafford Young Carers met with the co-ordinator from Manchester Art galleries and discussed with her the fact that children and young people who are carers rarely have the opportunity to follow their own personal dreams because they have to always be at hand for the needs of someone in their family who needs their care. In fact they often have self-imposed limitations on what they can expect to do in life.
So, the artist encouraged the young carers to think of fantastic ideas to stretch their imaginations and horizons, and what has been produced are magical pictures of dreams, fantasies and heaven!
Some young carers actually were interviewed for a promotional film for the V&A museum in London, and they also met David Lammy MP, Minister for Culture. Young carers were also pleased report that a good working partnership between GForce and NCH has come out of the project, as Hazel Bereford from GForce assisted to encourage the young carers in their work.
