YOUNG CONSUMERS 'DON'T BE SCAMMED'
Young consumers are being urged by the Council's Trading Standards Service to beware of scams. Also, the Office of Fair Trading has sent out text messages to youngsters with the message: "Urgent! U may have won £1k cash with '2 Good 2 B True'." Millions of consumers fall victim to scams every year sent by post, email, text, the phone and internet. It is estimated that around six per cent of all scam victims are aged between 15-24 years. The campaign also brings to light a new text message service called SMSus by PhonepayPlus, which regulates services bought over the phone and allows users to text 76787 if they are suspicious about a service. Further details of its work can be found on the www.consumerdirect.gov.uk.
TRAFFORD YOUNG PEOPLE CELEBRATE SUCCESS
Once again our Youth Service organised a successful annual awards event for over 90 young people aged 13-19 in Trafford. The celebration evening took place in the Robert Bolt Theatre, Sale Waterside on Thursday 24 January. The theatre was full to capacity with family and friends supporting the young people. Certificates were presented by our Executive Members, Councillors John Holden and Christine Turner, and by Fiona Waddington, Joint Director. First class entertainment was provided by young people involved in dance, music and samba drumming. Over 330 young people in total gained a nationally recognised award during 2007 ranging from Arts Awards, Youth Achievement and First Aid to the well known Duke of Edinburgh Award. Our thanks go to all these young people and to the dedicated staff of the Youth Service that made all this possible.
TRAFFORD COUNCIL BUDGET - 2008/09
The Council's budget for 2008/9 is £150.478 million, which represents an increase in spending of 3.5 per cent on last year. Trafford's Council Tax, excluding police and fire precepts, will go up by 4.94 per cent
