STRAIGHT TALKING IN TRAFFORD
Straight Talking is a peer education project that looks at the realities of being a teenage parent with year 9 and 10 pupils in their school's PHSE lessons. It aims to break down the myths and misinformation that surround the issue of being a teenage parent. The lessons include budgeting, carrying a buggy, a baby, and two bags of shopping up a flight of stairs! The programme is delivered by local teenage parents from Trafford's Butterflies Group who have been trained and are paid for by the partnership of CYPS and Straight Talking. Our first programme has been successfully delivered with year 9s in Lostock College and the school's evaluation is positive. The pupil feedback endorses the need for more 'real information and advice, delivered by people who have really been there'. We plan to deliver the project next term in Lostock High School again (year 10s) and in Stretford High School (year 9s). The course and the delivery are free at the moment and all schools have been invited to take part. If you are interested in the project please contact Deb Burton SRE Officer on 0161 9118601 or 07760167521.
SPECIALISED DIPLOMAS SUCCESS
We have been very successful in our applications for the 'Gateway 2' for the delivery of Specialist Diplomas and in the remaining two Specialist Diplomas under 'Gateway 1'. We have now been given approval to deliver Creative and Media and Information Technology for September 2009 (Gateway 1); and Manufacturing, Hair and Beauty, Hospitality and Catering, and Business Administration and Finance for September 2009 (some conditions to be met). Our congratulations to all schools and our College and partners involved with these bids. A particularly big thank you to colleagues in our School Improvement Service for putting these bids together.
DON'T SUFFER IN SILENCE - REPORT HATE CRIME
Victims of hate crime can now report incidents confidentially, as well as gain advice and support, at a new hate crime reporting surgery. For an initial four weeks, from 20 March, a surgery will be held at Shrewsbury Street Community Centre in Old Trafford on Thursdays between 1.00 p.m. and 4 p.m. The surgery has been set up to encourage more victims to come forwards to report incidents of hate against them because of their sex, race, religion, disability or sexual orientation. It will be staffed by officers from the Council's Community Safety Patrol Team who are fully trained to deal with this type of crime. In addition to the surgeries in Old Trafford, residents can now report incidents of hate crime directly to the Patrol Team via the Traffordwatch Reporting Helpline on 0161 912 2400.
