Support For Chairs

Announcing the publication of Leading Governors which explores the leadership role of the chair and provides an overview of the new programme of training and support offered by NCSL to support chairs of governors in this important job.

Leading governors has been developed in partnership with the National Governors' Association (NGA) and supported by the National Co-ordinators of Governor Services (NCOGS) and the Foundation, Aided Schools and Academies National Association (FASNA).

MORE SUPPORT TO COME:
From April 2012, more leadership development materials will be available for chairs of governors. These will cover:
Ensuring the governing body makes a difference and improves the school/academy
Putting the accountability role of the governing body into practice
Leading and managing the governing body

NATIONAL LEADERS OF GOVERNANCE:
The NCSL are also developing a National Leaders of Governance (NLG) programme where outstanding chairs of governors will work with other chairs to help them to develop and improve.

10 may 2011 letter on clause 37

The Education Bill contains a clause to allow maintained school governing bodies to change their size and composition. Just before the Bill finished its passage in the Commons this week, the schools minister Nick Gibb wrote to Liberal Democrat MPs Dan Rogerson and Tessa Munt explaining the Governments intention to ensure that governing bodies who change their constitution retain one staff governor and a local authority appointed governor.
